Denmark: Venice Biennale

TERROIR ApS (Denmark) have been selected as part of a team to represent Denmark at the 2012 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

TERROIR have teamed up with the editors of CONDITIONS magazine and Boris Brorman Jensen, Danish urbanist and teacher at the Aarhus School of Architecture.

The Danish Pavilion exhibition will be titled FUTURE GREENLAND and features five Danish practices working with five Greenland practices to develop visions for a
sustainable development of Greenland through this period of a sensational paradigm shift.

Our team suggested that a research project was needed to inform, critique and contextualise these interventions.

In our submission we suggested that "there are two competing concepts in play as to how architecture and urbanism might assist in the rejuvenation of Greenland. It is convention to suggest that a place is defined by its physical presence - that is, its buildings, open spaces and transport networks. An event such as the Biennale can reinforce seeing things from this point of view with its high focus on the formal and material aspects of architecture and urban design.

The concept which we championed for this exhibition, "is one which defines a place as the systems necessary to organize society and ensure we have the capacity to (re) produce and project themselves". Our proposal is to explore these systems as they exist in Greenland today and innovate within these systems with a transformative ambition.

Central to the proposal of new architectural and urban futures that respond to these innovations is an understanding of the spatial intelligence which defines Greenlanders view of the world and the form of their towns and cities as models of their spatial relation to each other and the surrounding landscape."
